UX vs. UI: What's the difference?

Before we get started, let's talk a little about what UX and UI are. If you're new to this, all these acronyms can get confusing.
UX stands for "user experience," which refers to the user's behavior or "journey" using a website, app, game, etc. Specifically, UX design deals with areas like what the user sees first, screen layouts that encourage certain actions and how intuitive the controls are.
UI stands for "user interface," which refers to how users interact with the design—controls, buttons, gestures, speech input. UI design focuses on areas like how the buttons look, hiding controls to save screen space, or translating hand gesture controls from mobile devices to desktop versions. There's also a lot of design elements involved in perfecting functionality; for example, using typography that's clearly legible or choosing colors that don't clash.

Udemy is a big name in online courses, and both their user interface and user experience design courses are generally well-received. They offer over 300 courses just in the UX design category, with a few dozen of those for free. Course lengths vary and can contain a mixture of videos and articles.
The course selection of Udemy is excellent, with a range of UX/UI design tutorials covering not just techniques, but also how to use design tools like Adobe XD, finding jobs as a UX professional and the theory behind UX and UI reasoning. The downside is the price per course, which tends to hover around $100, but occasionally you can find them on sale for under $20.

The YouTube channel of Laith Wallace outshines all other UX/UI design tutorials when it comes to giving career advice. Although he does touch on design techniques and theory, Wallace is at his best when disclosing insider knowledge about getting UX/UI jobs, maintaining a freelance career and how to conduct yourself in interviews.
This channel can complement any other design course you're taking, especially since it's free. Most of the other tutorials in this list can cover UX theory and application, but not all of them dive this deeply into the career and professional aspects of life as a freelance designer.

Skillshare has a similar setup to Udemy, and the two even share some courses and instructors. However, Skillshare tends to be a little cheaper—they offer subscriptions with unlimited access instead of Udemy's per-course fee, plus some free classes for non-subscribers—and their UI/UX Design Classes delve into some topics Udemy doesn't cover.
Courses at Skillshare vary in length, with some under and hour while others stretching over 10 hours. On the bright side, lessons are usually broken up into digestible 5- or 10-minute clips, making it easy to stop and start again at your own pace.

Caler Edwards is a popular designer who shares trade insights on his YouTube channel. His videos cover a variety of topics, from "speed art" showing his design process in time-lapse, to Adobe XD product news. But if you're looking specifically for UX/UI tutorials, his Design.Build.Launch. playlist is like a course on its own, spanning over two hours in 8 videos and covering topics like wireframing (in Adobe XD), site design (in Webflow), responsive design and launch.
Edwards keeps the focus on what's on his screen, making his channel ideal if you're rather watch design in action over a talking head. That's a huge help for new designers who are still figuring out their design editors, but he exclusively uses Adobe XD.
If you want more than just UX design, he also did a Daily UI series where he featured a new UI element every day for 60 days.

Interaction design is a field that's very closely related to UX, often used interchangeably. So you can consider the Interaction Design Foundation something of an user experience foundation. All of their classes revolve around UX, and offer something for beginner, intermediate and advanced levels. On top of that, they offer periodic webinars on UX topics and post blogs and ebooks regularly.
Despite the title, their courses cover a wide variety of web design instructionals, including becoming a great UI designer with 10 courses in 4 parts. It is perfect for beginners who want to learn everything all at once. With a paid membership you can access all the classes, but each one has limited enrollment so try to book early.

9. The Futur

The Futur is a YouTube channel dedicated to teaching people "how to make a living doing what they love," specifically in design careers. They cover a broad range of design-related topics, including an ample selection of UX and UI design tutorials.
This channel is great for its wide range of topics and the personalities of the hosts. It's very personable and casual, with vibes like a friend giving professional advice. But don't let that informality fool you—they get plenty technical and delve into advanced techniques when they need to.

10. Coursera

An industry leader in online learning, Coursera partners with over 200 universities to offer college-level classes to the general public, sometimes with certification or accredited degrees upon completion. Although they cater to virtually every discipline, there's more than a few courses for UX and UI design.
Users can pay per course or subscribe for a monthly fee, or else join Coursera Plus for unlimited access. If that seems too steep, there are some free classes available as well. Learners can take individual classes based on their interests, or choose a Specialization that involves a series of related classes.
